And While We’re At It
February 3rd 2005 @ 1:10 am General

So here is an article. High school students increasingly don’t believe First Amendment rights are a big deal.

I nearly cried when I read that. I sat, open-mouthed, staring at my screen. For the first time in my life, I was speechless. It took a day before I was even prepared to blog about it. And I still don’t know what to so. Here’s a choice quote, “Only half of the students said newspapers should be allowed to publish freely without government approval of stories.” WHAT?!

Have they really won? Have they brainwashed the next generation already? Only 83 percent of students felt that you should be able to express unpopular views – compared with 97 percent of parents and 99 percent of principals!

The study showed students given opportunities to be involved in school newspapers and other media are significantly more likely to defend First Amendment rights – but many schools have cut such programs.

So please – someone please tell me why the Secretary of Education is more worried about a lesbian couple on TV than this?
