Venezuela voted today, by a narrow margin of 51%, to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2007\/WORLD\/americas\/12\/03\/venezuela.referendum\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">reject constitutional amendments<\/a> that would have drastically changed the country. President Hugo Chavez, the mind that brought the <a href=\"http:\/\/in.reuters.com\/article\/worldNews\/idINIndia-30738920071128\" target=\"_blank\">asinine half-hour-offset timezone<\/a> for his country, put forth a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2007\/WORLD\/americas\/12\/02\/venezuela.constitution.ap\/index.html#cnnSTCText\" target=\"_blank\">vote for 69 amendments<\/a>. The amendments included allowing infinite presidential re-elections, changing presidential terms from 6 years to 7 years, and new forms of communal property. In addition to preparing a way for him to stay in power for the rest of his life, the majority of the amendments were geared towards changing Venezuela into a fully socialist state.<\/p>\n<p>Chavez took the results admirably, thanking those who opposed his proposal and noting the election proved Venezuelan democracy is maturing. So while I don&#8217;t agree with much of his politics, I give him a lot of credit for letting a democratic system run fairly.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Congratulations to Venezuelans everywhere!
