We’re in the fast lane, which means, of course, I’m speeding. This was a few months ago now (I didn’t dare post this until some time had passed).

Anyway, a highway patrol officer on a motorcycle comes up behind me and turns on his flashers. Oh crap! So I start to make my way off to the right hand side to pull over, and as I get into the break down lane he pulls up beside me and points forward. My girlfriend suggests maybe he wants me to get off on the exit we’re approaching, so I pull back into the lane, and start to turn onto the exit ramp. But the cop stays on the highway and points – in a fairly frustrated manner, if that’s possible – to where he is.

Thoroughly baffled, I start to pull over into the space on the left of the ramp between the ramp and the slow lane of the freeway, and he then shakes his head furiously “no” and points wildly off the highway, so I pull off the highway and down the exit ramp as I see him disappear and turn off his flashers. At the end of the highway, there’s no place to pull over, so I pull into the parking lot of a hotel, right next to the exit. But after sitting there for a minute it is clear I’m in the way, so I drive around the back of the hotel, and then around to the front again.

With no sign of the officer, I once again look at Lynn who shrugs. I decide that there’s very little chance the guy plans on coming back to find me, so I leave – but I don’t want to accidentally run into him again and have him bust me for evading an officer, so I take another nearby highway home instead.

So did the guy just want me off the highway? Did he change his mind? Did he not like my car? Was he just insane? What the hell was that?

So, I’m driving down the highway, on the way home from a BBQ, with my girlfriend.
