What the hell is this world coming to when the Secretary of Education for the United States of America denounces PBS for showing a family lead by two women on Postcards from Buster?

Are our leaders so backwards, up-tight, and scared that they can’t handle a little kid saying “those are my mommies?” (May not be exact quote, I haven’t seen the episode which has not yet aired, and won’t air many places). I mean, it would be different if the Buster had asked the little kid “well, how do they have sex?” or something, but for Christ’s sake, that’s all that was said about it. Besides, kids are going to run into families with one parent, two moms, two dads, two dads and a mom, and all kinds of stuff – what’s so bad about this episode? After all, it’s a real family!

The original version of this story I heard was simply about the large out-cry about the episode, and I was suitably disgusted. But when I found out that our Secretary of Education (yes, education, not Secretary of Run Away and Hide) was at the forefront of all this… I… well. I don’t know what’s worse than disgusted… but this whole thing is just revolting. Clearly Ms. Spellings is not clear on the idea of education.

Sarah has a very eloquent blog post about this here and provides links to stories from CNN, NPR, The Boston Globe, and others.

My God, what is this country coming to?

So I read about this on Friday.
