High school students increasingly don&#8217;t believe First Amendment rights are a big deal.<\/p>\n<p>I nearly cried when I read that. I sat, open-mouthed, staring at my screen. For the first time in my life, I was speechless. It took a day before I was even prepared to blog about it. And I still don&#8217;t know what to so. Here&#8217;s a choice quote, &#8220;<b>Only half of the students said newspapers should be allowed to publish freely without government approval of stories<\/b>.&#8221; WHAT?!<\/p>\n<p>Have they really won? Have they brainwashed the next generation already? Only 83 percent of students felt that you should be able to express unpopular views &#8211; compared with 97 percent of parents and 99 percent of principals!<\/p>\n<p>The study showed students given opportunities to be involved in school newspapers and other media are significantly more likely to defend First Amendment rights &#8211; but many schools have cut such programs.<\/p>\n<p>So please &#8211; someone <b>please<\/b> tell me why the Secretary of Education is more worried about a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.phildev.net\/phil\/blog\/index.php?title=are_ya_kidding_you_gotta_be_kidding&amp;more=1&amp;c=1&amp;tb=1&amp;pb=1\">lesbian couple on TV<\/a> than this?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>So here is an article.
