But to me, I think what was most exciting was the number of voters and the very large margin by which Obama won (electoral college wise). It speaks volumes that he won by a landslide and shows that while it is still a huge problem, racism is finally starting to subside in this country.

Admittedly, I suspect part of the reason was perfectly captured by The Onion (how sad is it when a parody is actually right?). However, despite that, I still think this is a huge win for showing the world we’re not an ignorant backwater prejudiced country. We’re (finally) willing to put our money where our mouth is. I heartily applaud this country for picking a candidate based on his policies and not on the color of his skin.

For the first time other countries are happy, hopeful, and excited about something that the US has done.

To put it another way, for the first time in a long time, I’m proud to be an American. Finally, I once again feel like I can admit I’m an American in the country I currently live in (Switzerland) and maybe not get looks of disdain.

Unfortunately, there was also a sad note to this election. Three states (Florida, Arizona, and California), elected to ban gay marriage. While it doesn’t surprise me that such things passed in Florida and Arizona, I was shocked that California passed it. A similar prop passed 4 years ago, but was overturned by the California Supreme Court. Unfortunately this year’s prop wasn’t a law but a constitutional amendment which is much harder to overturn. This country may have managed to get past its fear of black people, but it still remains, in many ways, prejudiced and ignorant.

However, with the presidential election I have a small glimmer of hope for this country. And that is very refreshing. Thank you, America.

As others have blogged, this election was very exciting.
